Transform your drawings into prints — and discover how one discipline sharpens the other.

Course description

This one-year program combines a wide repertoire of traditional printmaking techniques with the rigorous study of observational drawing, offering a rare opportunity to develop both skills in parallel.

A unique aspect is the integration of classical drawing studies into every step of the process. Each weekend begins with drawing exercises from the live model, portrait, landscape, self-portrait, or master studies, which then serve as the foundation for the printmaking technique of the session.

The program introduces students to relief, intaglio, monotype, and lithographic methods, while maintaining the high technical standards associated with professional print studios. By working in a small group of no more than 12 participants, students receive personal guidance at every stage — from sketch to finished edition — culminating in a final exhibition and portfolio review.

Through this structured integration of drawing and printmaking, participants learn not only how to master each technique but also how to translate the clarity, composition, and value organization of their drawings into prints of professional quality.

Curriculum & Techniques

Over the course of three trimesters (October–June), students explore a broad range of techniques: Linocut, Reduction linocut, Woodblock, Drypoint and Copper etching, Aquatint and Lithography. Final modules includes edition printing, portfolio development, and an end-of-year exhibition with the possibility of print sales.

Each weekend combines:

Saturday: Drawing studies connected to the printmaking technique, technical demonstrations, plate or block preparation, and trial proofs

Sunday: Further development, edition printing, and a structured group critique

Drawing Integration

Drawing is the backbone of the program. Using the observational methods of The Florence Academy of Art, students practice composition, mass drawing, line, value, and light–shadow relationships before transferring these concepts into print. Assignments include landscapes, trees, portraits, self-portraits, master copies, imaginative compositions, and interiors.

For example:

  • Relief techniques emphasize mass and silhouette.
  • Intaglio techniques highlight line, edge, and fine value shifts.
  • Monotype techniques train the handling of large tonal masses and edges.

Short homework assignments between weekends provide continuity, while regular critiques ensure clarity of form, value organization, and print readability.
